Why is HCX so awesome?

HCX is one of the best tools you can find in the VMware Swiss army knife

The underrated product in the VMware portfolio

VMware HCX is probably one of those products that the operation guys greatly appreciate, but at the same time, the higher management will vaguely hear about it. Product page here: https://www.vmware.com/products/hcx.html

HCX (commonly referred to as Hybrid Cloud Extension, but the BU refused to acknowledge that acronym) first appeared in late 2017 with some marketing collateral and a dedicated Hands-on Lab for customers to better understand the concepts. It was a very good product back then, but VMware didn’t push for it to hit the main stage. I would normally bring it up to customers I knew would benefit them.

Things got better after VMware’s cloud strategy became more apparent, with VMC on AWS marking the starting point and the partnership we established with all other Hyperscalers + the growing VCPP numbers. Suddenly, HCX became a tool that could potentially deliver the ultimate promise of “workload mobility.” Analysts picked it up and called it VMware’s Top-Secret sauce.

Fast-forward to today. HCX is something we will mention when we talk about large-scale migration, workload mobility, multi-cloud, etc. because the technology is so cool and can address the workload mobility challenges faced by companies looking to embark on a multi-cloud journey.

What does HCX deliver?

When you look at the product page of HCX, it highlights the main features of HCX:

  • Accelerate Modernization Effort
  • Simplify Workload Migration
  • Optimize Hybrid or Multi-cloud
  • Ensure Business Continuity

Simply put, it’s like vMotion on steroids; you can do many things to the VM while carrying out a long-distance bulk migration exercise. Some cool things include upgrading non-vSphere workloads (KVM and Hyper-V) during migration and automatically identifying applications and VM relationships so that you can logically group VMs to have a more efficient migration. You can also use HCX to upgrade your VM version during the migration exercise.

You can find some HCL walkthrough and labs in the VMware HOL (Hands-on Lab). Check it out today!
